An exciting project to transform the current makeshift BMX tracks next to Highgate Library on Shepherds Hill into a multi use loop and active outdoor zone for children and young people has been approved to go forward into Round 1 of Haringey CIL spending this year.
After extensive consultation with current users and local parents, Haringey Parks Department, BMX and other cycle organisations and the local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, a scheme has been created by local design and architecture studio Room 102. It will provide a low maintenance loop for biking, BMX, skating and scooting. A separate nature trail for younger children will be introduced on the northern, densely-wooded part of the site, with bug hotels, bird boxes and info about the bat habitat in the adjacent disused train tunnels. It is hoped that the presence of adults providing cycle maintenance support + TCV conservation volunteers, helping to maintain a much improved and less neglected-looking site, will also be a deterrant to the anti-social behaviour which has been a problem in the area.

This is contrary to ecological green policy and would be an ecological eyesore as well. A BMX track would be totally unsuitable near a library which requires peace and quiet.
The copse should remain planted with trees, the lungs of London, and protected from vandalism and fly-tipping.
London needs all the green areas it can get as an absolute PRIORITY
The bike track has been there since the 80s. The proposal is sensitive to its green surroundings with no hard surfaces being introduced providing – especially the younger community – with a much needed space to be active in a green setting.
What is happening with the Bmx track its such a wasted space those ramps have been there for such along time . When is going to be upgraded is there any news on this . Very much hoping this space is to put to great use soon .
I quite agree Tania – I’m afraid this project has been delayed for years by changes in personnel at the Council + objections from local groups. However, the good news is that it has now been given planning permission by the Council and we are promised that they will get to work on it very soon, as well as the Parkland Walk natural play project. You can be sure that, as soon as they begin work, I will be trumpeting it in our monthly newsletter!
Great work Maggy that will bring joy to plenty of families .
