Highgate has a number of official blue plaques – Charles Dickens, Mary Kingsley, John Betjman and AE Housman for example, are all within a stone’s throw of each other in the village.  But now we are hoping to get another one, for someone who isn’t perhaps as famous as those but was a very great man indeed.

Solomon Schonfeld, who lived for most of his adult life on Shepherd’s Hill, is credited with saving the lives of more than 3500 people before, during and immediately after the Second World War, including the many children that he brought out on the kindertransports.

They and their descendants are known as “Schonfeld’s Children”. In 2013 the government posthumously awarded Rabbi Schonfeld the title of “British Hero of the Holocaust”. And now we very much hope that English Heritage will agree that we too can honour this heroic man of Highgate.
