Recycling

And since you will no doubt be popping into Highgate Stationers for your Christmas requisites, this might be a timely reminder that they can also recycle batteries, Brita filters and printer cartridges. They are hoping to add Sodastream canisters as soon as they can secure a supplier of replacement canisters.

Planning approval for Cemetery plan

Good news that Camden has given consent to the Unlocking Highgate Cemetery masterplan. The plan aims to safeguard the Cemetery’s historic fabric, while improving access and facilities which will support learning volunteering and engagement with local communities. More here.

Parkland Walk closures
There will be two periods of closure of the Parkland Walk in the vicinity of Mount View Road Bridge from 24 Nov to 19 Dec and 5 Jan to 6 Feb.Those walking towards Finsbury Park will have to leave the path at Crouch Hill and rejoin at Blythwood Road.
Harington, which helps young people with special educational needs and disabilities to thrive through specialist training, personal support and meaningful work, have launched a campaign to raise £250,000 to supplement their Government funding. The funds raised will sustain their unique training model, keep class sizes small and employ specialist teachers and support staff. Find out how you can help here.
Omved’s Artist of the Month

Omved Gardens (at the end of Townsend Yard behind the High Street) are calling on all creatives to apply to be their Artist of the Month. They’re looking for people who paint, sculpt, photograph, write or perform and whose work resonates with Omved’s values of nature, ecology, food and community. The chosen artist will have their work showcased on the site. Find out more and apply here.

The Haringey branch of the London Cycling Campaign have done an interesting comparison of our two boroughs’ record on protected cycle lanes. They found that Haringey has built just one mile of protected cycle lanes (marked only by flimsy plastic wands) since 2013, whereas Camden has built over 15 miles of protected cycleways, with 90% now upgraded to safer, permanent, stepped tracks.
Emergency accommodation now open

Due to recent freezing temperatures, the Mayor of London has activated the SWEP scheme whereby London boroughs open additional emergency accommodation for people sleeping rough. If you see anyone in need of shelter or are worried about someone you’ve seen sleeping rough, please contact StreetLink who will notify the local outreach team who offer support.

“Mini Hollywood” for Kentish Town?
Camden are currently consulting on proposals for a “Camden Film Quarter” in the Regis Road site in Kentish Town.. The plans include a film studio complex, a film school, a “talent hotel”, affordable housing and a footway to Hampstead Heath. Find out more here.
Think and Do have many brilliant projects running across North London right now. These include Street Swaps to enable swapping unused items (one this Friday 28 Nov at Kentish Town Library), as well as toy swaps in local schools, Sharing Spaces community hubs in estates and libraries (coming to Camden Highgate Library on Wednesday afternoons from January), urban wildflower meadows and much more. You can find out more and get help to start your own project here.

  • Join the HNF committee – only four meetings a year to discuss key issues
  • Biodiversity group – help support the HNF Biodiversity Network and promote local green initiatives
  • Traffic/transport group – help us develop a community-led vision of what the future of travel in the area might be
  • Highgate Festival – offer your skills or organise part of the programme or an event
